After spending a few days in New York this summer and eating a variety of unique food, I noticed how there are a lot of trends that have to do with this industry. These trends also became apparent when I noticed my friends in college who intern or work in New York, specifically Manhattan, eating foods I’ve never heard of before.  I have found a bunch of great places that showcase the latest in food trends that fit in a lot of people checkpoints when it comes to cuisines that they like.  Check out the spicy list below for more details and how to become more of a New Yorker by eating these foods.

Not that I always eat dessert first, but let’s start with the Up Cake. People who reside in New York or who are visiting rave about these little, delicious push-up pops. One place you can find one of these is at Billy’s Bakery on 9th Avenue. Don’t forget to eat dinner first though!

Have you ever had two food types in one? Well, the Sushi Burrito introduces this concept to the taste buds. The sushi burrito is just like regular sushi, but only bigger and better. Uma Temakeria is New York City’s first restaurant to serve sushi burritos, located on 64 7th Avenue in New York City.

I don’t know about you,  but I’ve heard of wheat bread, white bread and rye bread, but purple bread? Believe it or not, purple bread is under the “superfood” category in Manhattan. It’s made up of tons of antioxidants and even digests 20% slower than regular white bread. Being the health nut I am, you can call me Ms. Purple!

Go green or go home! One huge trend going on in Manhattan is the no-waste restaurants. Although this is not a direct food trend, it is collectively a movement in the restaurant industry. It is a known fact that American’s waste 40% of their food. According to thrillist.com, Chef and restaurateur Dan Barber made a cannonball-sized splash in the food world when for 19 days, he exclusively served dishes made of food waste, at the pop-up outpost out of his renowned West Village Eatery Blue Hill.
