Privacy policy

Scope

This policy applies to Manhattan Digest websites and the publishing services offered through them. It covers readers, commenters, contributors, and site administrators.

Fun & Joy, LLC provides administrative operation for this volunteer publication. Individual writers control the substance and opinions in their own work, but they do not control the site's technical data practices.

Information you provide

Comments

A comment submission may include your name, email address, comment, account association, and reply relationship. Your name and approved comment may appear publicly. Your email address is not displayed publicly.

Messages and inquiries

If you email us or use an active contact form, we receive the information you submit. That information may include your name, email address, phone number, website, organization, and message.

Contributor and administrator accounts

Account records may include a name, email address, authentication data, role, profile, content, revision history, and security events. Published bylines and biographies are public.

Search

Search terms are sent to the site and appear in the results address. Search addresses may be retained in ordinary server logs and browser history.

Information collected automatically

Our infrastructure may process an IP address, hashed IP value, browser and device information, requested page, referring page, date, time, security signals, cache status, and diagnostic timing.

We use this information to deliver pages, prevent abuse, rate-limit comments, diagnose failures, secure accounts, and maintain reliable service. We do not use it to decide or revise a writer's opinions.

Cloudflare and Turnstile

Cloudflare provides network delivery, security, serverless computing, and data-storage services for the site. Cloudflare may process request information as described in itsprivacy policy.

Forms use Cloudflare Turnstile to distinguish people from automated abuse. Turnstile may process an IP address, user-agent header, TLS fingerprint, site key, origin, and related security signals.

Cloudflare describes that processing in itsTurnstile privacy addendum. Turnstile signals are used for security and bot detection, not behavioral advertising by this site.

Cookies and local storage

The site may use cookies or similar storage that is necessary for security, authentication, sessions, form protection, and administrative features. Cloudflare may also set security cookies when a request requires a challenge.

As of the effective date, the new site does not use optional browser audience analytics, advertising pixels, or cross-site behavioral advertising. We will update this policy before adding those uses.

How information is used

• Provide pages, search, comments, accounts, and requested support.
• Authenticate users and protect the site from fraud or abuse.
• Review comments and respond to messages or privacy requests.
• Maintain, debug, measure, and improve technical reliability.
• Protect legal rights and comply with applicable law.

When information is disclosed

We disclose information to hosting, security, database, storage, and communication providers when needed to operate the site. These providers receive only the information needed for their services.

Information may be disclosed when required by law, to protect safety or legal rights, or during a transfer of the site's administration. We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-site behavioral advertising.

Retention

We retain information only as long as reasonably needed for the purpose described here. Retention may also support security, backups, legal obligations, dispute resolution, and abuse prevention.

Published comments and contributor content may remain as part of the public archive. Security logs and backup copies may remain for a limited period after active records are removed.

Your choices and requests

You may ask to access, correct, or delete personal information associated with you. You may also object to or restrict certain processing where applicable law provides that right.

A request may require information needed to verify your identity. Some records may be retained when required for security, legal obligations, public archives, or the rights of other people.

This publication does not currently sell personal information or use it for cross-site behavioral advertising. A browser opt-out signal therefore does not change those practices.

Children

This publication is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13. Children under 13 should not submit comments, create accounts, or send personal information through the site.

A parent or guardian who believes a child submitted personal information may contact us and request its removal.

Security and international processing

We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards. No online service can promise absolute security, and visitors should avoid sending sensitive information that the site does not request.

Cloud infrastructure may process information in locations outside your state or country. Applicable safeguards and legal requirements continue to govern that processing.

Changes to this policy

This policy may change when site practices or legal requirements change. The effective date at the top identifies the current version. Material changes will receive appropriate notice on the site.
