Another sunny day in Los Angeles passed, holding the 59th Annual Grammys in its palm. Hundreds of celebrities filtered in to flood the red carpet in all their visionary glory, or in some cases some with their "Visionary WTF". A brief recap of last night’s red carpet moments: the good, the bad and the ugly. Unfortunately for my humor’s sake, no one showed up in a meat pod or a dress made out of scissors or razor blades, nothing too crazy. Except for Cee-Lo! I don’t know what that was, but he rocked it.
So what I saw a lot of this season was surprisingly nothing new, but revived in a refreshing way. We saw a lot of dewy, glowing skin with varying shades of a nude, glossy peach-y lips. The perfect picture of California fun in the sun. And Halsey stepped out doing it right with her hair and makeup on point, especially that highlight. GIRRLLLL that is how you DO it! You go Halsey. Demi Lovato also rocking the nude glossy lip with her ensemble, looking like a bronzed Goddess version of the legendary Selena. Another woman doing it right last night.
Maren Morris, Skylar Grey and J. Lo also working this trend 2.0 and that’s the sheer beauty of it. Taking something that’s been done to death and reviving it, so cheers to these women for bringing it back from the dead. For a while there, we almost lost the idea of having a nude lip with a heavier eye. People were going all crazy and amplifying every feature on their face; the smokey eye, the contour, the bold lip. All on one face! Pick one for heaven’s sake, pick ONE! A sigh of relief that yesterday that trashy trend is rivaled once again by the minimalist approach packing a huge punch. waPOW!
Another thing I noticed was the texture in most people’s hair. Very piecey and bed head chic, very much like Pamela Anderson and Heather Locklear in their 90’s hey-day. It’s time to bust out the wax sprays or the sea salt sprays if you’re trying to duplicate that look. Faith Hill, Katy Perry and Paris Jackson were just a few women with these relaxed tousled looks. Just gaaaawwgeous dahling! Carrie Underwood also sporting a textured up-do on the Red Carpet. It was unfinished and raw looking, loosely pinned and organic- like a first-year beauty student did it, and it was honestly great. Hopefully the beauty of the imperfect can help break down everybody’s desperate need to look like a perfect Pinterest picture. Suck it Pinterest!
On to the men, Jason Derulo your beard is about the only thing I can condone from yesterday. That is how you groom a beard, great lines of precision in there, but the outfit- I’ll refrain. Scale it back bro. Scale it back. Pentatonix- the GUYS were groomed so impeccably groomed, great hair, good job, even your little man dresses worked for you. Kirstin, what?…that was a real example of a “bad hombre”, the Trump jokes are endless. Cue the meme of Kevin Hart looking sideways with that puzzled look on his face. Why Kirstin, why?? We love you, stop it.
DNCE, also looking fabulously put together in classic Grammy style- Joe Jonas why am I not surprised your hair looked the best. Cole, I realize this is your thing, honey I really do get it- Mom told you that you could do anything you wanted to growing up, but can we please just put your Mohawk in the center? Please?? Hairstyling is about balance and harmony, and that just throws it all off.
The red carpet is the place to take risks, and if there is one place to try out something we’ve always wanted to see it’s the Grammys. Everyone truly did look so fabulous and well groomed, with a few exceptions; (see Mike Posner…huge WTF moment, like an acid trip from the Joker gone wrong, check that out for some afternoon giggles). Obviously I’m more attuned to the hair and makeup aspect but the fashion was amazing this year as well. After all, it was the Grammys, you wanted to, so you did.
