Vin Sur Vingt, located in the West Village with other spaces sprawled throughout Manhattan, is exactly what you think of when the term "wine bar" comes into play. The only time where quaint will be described in this review is due to the size of the space inside their location on West 11th Street. Because everything else they provided for us last night packed a ton of flavor, amazing execution, and of course, an amazing selection of wines.
The West Village location has been open for six year, which is the Manhattan restaurant business really is 40 years, given the turnover rate in the best foodie city in the world. I can see why this place is such a hit, as it has a lot of elements of sophistication and intimacy to it that it almost echos the kinds of wine bars you would see on the streets of Paris. It creates an illuminating experience that is designed for a quiet dinner for two or with your friends and family.
The brains behind this wonderful concept is the handsome and charming Sebastien Auvet, or Seb for short. He created the wine list for each location (with an impressive 50 wines by the glass!), focusing on selections from classic regions such as Bordeaux and Alsace to hidden gems from Corsica. Seb was incredibly helpful and attentive last night and he took us through his incredible wine and food menu, all of which we were pleasantly satisfied with.
Regarding the food options, here is what we recommend the next time you are in Vin Sur Vingt. The Charcuterie section of the menu is quite impressive (as you can see above) and features some of the best in meats, cheeses and more for you to spread some of their delicious bread on for a hearty and tasty bite. Of this, their Pate De Campagne with toast and pickles is an easy standout, especially if you are a fan of Pate. We also loved their Saucisson Sec (Dry Sausage Plate) and it had such a fresh taste to it and a perfect example of a starter plate.
I was most impressed with their Cassolettes, which translates to French casseroles served in a small cast iron pot. The standout amongst the three (although all were delicious) was the Boeuf Bourgnion with red wine, carrots, fingerling potatoes and pearl onions. This dish I'm sure was a killer in the winter season, as it warms you up instantly with its crazy flavor combinations and just how perfectly cooked the beef actually is.
