When it comes to dining and writing for Manhattan Digest, I prefer to highlight singular locations that have a true local feel and make this city special. Rarely do I ever feature places that have multiple locations unless there is something special that makes me want to go there again and again. Dos Caminos is one of those exceptions.
With five beautiful locations that cover the geographic spectrum of Manhattan for the most part (Meatpacking, Park Avenue, Soho, Third Avenue, Times Square), Dos Caminos is one of the best places to go to in The Big Apple for tasty Mexican cuisine. It's spacious atmosphere, playful colors (in particular luscious reds), friendly staff and so much more make this definitely a spot you want to hang with your friends or even enjoy an intimate dinner for two at.
I was particularly starving before I headed to their Park Avenue location the other night (conveniently a block or so away from the 28th Street stop on the 6 line), so I was jonesing to see what would be the best things to order from one of my favorite Mexican spots in the city. Guacamole is a most when you are ordering at a place like this, however I wanted to go against the grain and get their Seasonal Fruit edition which made for a much sweeter experience. Guacamole by itself can lack a lot of flavor, but when you add the pungent aspects of what fruit can bring, it can really gel with the chip you are dunking it into and provide a great starter meal.
Taco's aren't just for Tuesdays, and it was what I was craving most so I was thrilled that they had both a surf and turf option available with their Baja Taco, which came with grilled skirt steak*, tecate battered rock shrimp, sriracha aioli and bacon guacamole. The mixture of both the shrimp and skirt steak blended very well together, but when you add the BG (bacon guacamole) and the aioli, it enhances the flavor of both, making it a 3-4 bite wonderment.
If you are looking to go a little bit more decadent with your ordering and want one of their house specialties, then their Dayboat Sea Scallops will really do the trick. Perfectly cooked with a side of coconut jasmine rice, this dish will really sing to you if Scallops are truly your thing.
Don't forget about getting one of the best sides I have ever tried at a Mexican restaurant, their Satur Farms Mexico City Street Corn, which I preferred off the cob. The corn has such a fresh and tasty sweetness and can easily be jarred and bought by this guy.
Overall, Dos Caminos has it going on with the execution of its ideas from structure to food to drink, and more. They also have some pretty cool stuff coming up for Cinco De Mayo, which is this Friday. Yay.
