Hygge is a Danish word that roughly translates into a feeling of coziness or contentment. Recently, it’s popped up in America during the winter months as a way to chase the blues away, but it’s a year-round concept. Hygge is a very important part of Bornholm.
You can almost pass by Bornholm and miss it. The entrance is fairly small, and a first glance in the window almost looks like a modest Brooklyn coffee shop. Beyond the café area, the backyard opens up into a much larger patio, garden, and seating under an awning. The atmosphere is VERY relaxed, and more European than most New Yorkers would realize, seemingly designed to linger with friends and family for a while (Hygge!).
We started with browsing the drink menu, and I have to say that it’s a standout in NYC. Usually my eye is drawn to a few drinks, but it’s pretty clear I’d like one of two or three. Almost all the cocktails sounded intriguing or delightful, including some variations on more traditional drinks. The ones we did have were smooth, and well blended, and I’d have to say some of the best mixed drinks I’ve had.
While my guest and I were chatting and enjoying our drinks, bread was brought out. I mainly mention this because it’s a few different kinds, and all are handmade, and even the butter is handmade!! It’s a small thing but it sure was delicious!!
For dinner, Bornholm’s claim to fame is a dish served on a plank of wood and surrounded by mashed potatoes. As a side note, I was rather impressed at the number of gluten free and vegetarian options on the menu. I had the Flank Steak, with Asparagus Puree, Fingerling Potatoes, and Baby Carrots. For dessert, we had the Blueberry Cake and Panna Cotta (Which, don’t let the description fool you. It mentions licorice but it wasn’t overpowering, and my guest couldn’t even taste it!).
Bornholm is something different from the hustle and bustle of New York. Now that the weather has warmed up, take an afternoon or evening and spend some quality time with your loved ones in their back-garden area. Experience a little Danish hygge, here in New York.
