From Batman to Buffy, with six iterations of The Doctor and many more, The Cocktail Guide to the Galaxy serves up inventive mixed drinks for nerds everywhere. This weekend, author Andy Heidel launched his new cocktail compendium at The Way Station, his Doctor Who themed bar in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. More than 60 television shows and films from Alien to X-Men are featured within the collection’s punny cocktail list, illustrated with original fan art and punctuated by clever quips from Heidel and his gang of fantasy-loving friends.

Between sips at Saturday’s launch, Heidel and other contributors read selections from The Cocktail Guide, including The Quaffing Dead, and Biggest Rookie Mistakes People Make in a Bar Or in a Horror Film. Imbibers sampled favorites from the bar and book, like the Jurassic Dark Daiquiri, Sonic Screwdriver, and My Precious.

No trip to The Way Station is complete without a visit to its well-known bathroom. Can’t find it? Look for the TARDIS—it’s not just for show! The quirky bar on Washington Avenue is open daily with happy hour prices until 8pm with a full calendar of live performances, readings, and other nerdtacular events. More here: thewaystationbk.com, monthly calendar.

Just in time for the holidays, The Cocktail Guide to the Galaxy (St. Martin’s Press) is available now at bookstores and on Amazon. Grab copies for each of the nerds on your gift list and, sci-fi lover or not, pick one up for yourself—it’s packed with clever drinks for your next theme party, or even just another thirsty Thursday. And while you’re waiting for yours to arrive, test drive this purple pleaser, inspired by Neil Patrick Harris’s beloved Dr. Horrible web series:

1 part The Bitter Truth violet liqueur

1 part Bombay Sapphire gin

¼ part lemon juice

Pour all the ingredients into a large glass filled with ice. Stir, then strain into a fancy glass and garnish with a lemon peel. Drink it and feel those things you don’t dare feel.
