While New York may be best known for basketball and baseball when it comes to sports, many people aren’t aware that it also has professional soccer teams as well. Not everyone is up to speed on the tournaments and latest updates on these teams and what’s been happening.

New York has two professional soccer teams – the long-standing New York Red Bulls, who started over 20 years ago as the New York-New Jersey MetroStars, and the New York City FC which is co-owned by the New York Yankees and English Premier League team, Manchester City. The Major League Soccer (MLS) season starts in March, with the regular season running until late October and playoffs continuing into early December.

It’s reported that the club dropped $6.25m in 2017 on 23-year-old Argentinian winger Alejandro Romero Gamarra in the hope that he can become an asset to their attack, working with Wright-Phillips.
New York City Football Club
New York’s second MLS franchise played its inaugural season back in 2015 and has made some great strides with several top-rated European players on the team. Naming Claudio Reyna as Director of Football Operations, the team is led by someone who isn’t just familiar with American soccer but also has experience of German, British and Scottish leagues. NYCFC has some strong midfielders, in particular Alex Ring and Maxi Moralez, while Sean Johnson, the team’s goalkeeper, is top class.
The team doesn’t have a fancy state-of-the-art facility like the Bulls yet so it’s playing at the Yankee Stadium, but it has served them better than expected over the course of three seasons and brings enthusiastic crowds out every time who have really embraced the team wholeheartedly. In fact, based on previous seasons, the team has one of the largest fanbases in the league and the franchise is the third most valuable in the MLS division, with an estimated worth of over $285 million. Fans are looking forward to seeing this club grow and become even more of a threat on the pitch.
