Well, here we are…eight months into the pandemic with nothing but Manhattan pavement to trod. Right? Think again. Thanks to the wise actions of Pennsylvania’s state government, they’ve managed to flatten the curve and keep COVID at bay, allowing for indoor dining and other activities. So off we go to The Poconos for a fun getaway.
In just under 2.5 hours, city dwellers can escape to The Settlers Inn, a rustic and sturdy lodge located in the quaint town of Hawley, PA. Hawley, located in the Northern part of the Poconos runs along the Lackawaxen river and offers the perfect respite to reflect and rejuvenate.

19th century British textile designer and poet William Morris influenced the English Arts and Crafts style of the lodge with plenty of warmth and coziness. Fortunately, the Genzlingers have impeccable taste and have eschewed the tacky country designs so prevalent in the 1980s and early 90s. Instead, they opt for an aesthetic of minimalism in both the shared areas and within the rooms. Within the room, you’re likely to sprawl on an incredibly comfortable mattress, ensuring a restful night of sleep.
Bluestone and chestnut lumber, both native to Pennsylvania, are prominent throughout the building and there is plenty of space for small business meetings or more romantic interludes. A sprawling outdoor deck gives visitors the opportunity to dine and capture views of the finely manicured landscape. Or, you can choose to sit and sip a cocktail from their fully stocked bar.
Free daily activities include yoga, wine tasting, and live jazz. In addition to the Settlers Inn, the Genzlinger family also owns and operates two nearby properties: Silver Birches and Ledges Hotel. All three locations have something to offer and a complimentary shuttle service runs between the properties.
Nearby sites include Lake Wallenpaupack, the second largest man-made lake entirely contained in the state of Pennsylvania. Swimming, kayaking, or just relaxing on one of the many benches that border the lake are but a few recreational options. There are also a number of waterfalls and hikes to pursue, all of which are a short drive from The Settlers Inn.
Dinner is served nightly at their on-site restaurant and there are other nearby options as well. Breakfast, served from 8-10:30 each morning, is included in the stay. For private dining options, there are new outdoor cabins behind the property, located directly beside a peaceful, rippling creek.
