Social media has firmly embedded itself into all areas of our lives these days, but let’s remember that it’s still a relatively new thing. If you’re a little confused, at times, on what to post, when and where – and how it makes sense to you on both personal and professional levels – don’t fret.

How you want to utilize social media depends on your personal preferences and objectives, says PR professional Caren West. And while there may not be any hard and fast rules, we are starting to get a sense of what works on social media and what doesn’t. The cool thing is that each of us shapes this social media culture, as we contribute to and interact with it. Sharing the things that really make us roll our eyes or want to hit the “unfollow” button can only help us all get a sense of how best to use these new communication platforms.

Caren, president of Caren West PR, a group that manages public relations campaigns and events for national and international lifestyle and entertainment brands, says she’s pretty tolerant when it comes social media, but she does have some pet peeves.

Are you doing some of these social media don’ts?

Have a bad experience with a restaurant or store? Caren wants you to try to address the situation in person or ask a manager for help first before posting about it online. (Yelp is primarily a platform for disgruntled workers and complainers, Caren says.)

Why are you talking to each other through a public forum? Caren wants you to do it in person. "It’s gross, and no one cares."

On Your Grind

Tagging a zillion people in random posts that are super sales-oriented and promotional? "It’s obvious," Caren says. "Be better than that."

It's an effort to get more followers, and Caren thinks it's embarrassing.

"Once again, a public forum, don’t be weird," says Caren. "No one wants to be in a room where a couple is arguing."

On Your Grind

Caren thinks you shouldn't post anything about politics, unless it’s well thought-out. "You’re never going to change anyone else’s opinion," she says. "Shhhhh..."

"Unless they’re hilarious, of course," says Caren.

That’s Caren’s list of social media don’ts. What’s yours? What do you see on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or elsewhere that really gets your goat? Let Kyle know, and we’ll post some updates.
