Tomorrow might be a big day for Irish folks, but there is another event happening in the neighboring borough of Brooklyn that is sure to throw Peruvian New Yorkers (and their admirers) into a state of elation.
Peru’s most beloved songstress, Susana Baca, will take to the stage at Pioneer Works, located in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The program is part of the World Music Institute Series, which has presented over 1,500 artists from 100 different countries since 1985.
Susana Baca has had a lengthy career in her native country, including a stint as named Minister of Culture under former President Ollanta Humala, whose term ended in 2016. Baca was the first black member of the cabinet and the first singer to be appointed. It offered her a platform to advocate for social equality which favored marginalized Peruvians. The position was short lived, however, given Government re-positioning and conflicts with her performance schedule.
The Grammy Award winner was catapulted to International fame in 1995 when Talking Heads lead singer, David Byrne, captured his ear with her quietly stunning version of "Maria Lando" (click to watch). Now, those who aren’t familiar with this living legend will have the rare opportunity to experience her raw and soulful voice tomorrow evening, March 17th in Brooklyn.
