What would they give you for a basket of tickets? Hell in a Handbag productions promises a ton of outlandish humor with their 20th anniversary revival of The Drag Seed. The Chicago based troupe performed the show earlier this year in their hometown and has brought the whole cast—along with the same antics- to New York’s famed LaMama.
Publicity announcements describe the show like this:
Carson is a perfect little boy who likes to dress like the perfect
little girl and they’re deadly serious about crowns and pronouns.
Carson’s mother, Connie, loves and accepts Carson but wishes Carson
wasn’t so competitive. Carson always gets what they want, and they
really want to win the drag pageant at their very progressive school –
The Josephine Baker Rainbow Academy for Gifted Students. When Carson
loses to Summer Breeze, they vow to get that crown – one way or
another.
Does the plot sound familiar? Fans of the 1956 film The Bad Seed will surely know, as it is a riff on the cult favorite. If you've not seen it, do yourself a favor and stream it immediately. Handbag productions have received numerous raves over the years and they will certainly bring that same level of quality to LaMama.
THE DRAG SEED runs March 31 – April 10, Thursday - Saturday at 8pm and
Sunday at 4pm with an additional performance Monday, April 4 at 8pm.
