Life in 2026 is no stroll in the park. With the country at war, inflation on the rise, and human rights in constant peril, the modern landscape feels increasingly fraught. Yet, despite the sturm und drang of the present, we can at least be thankful we aren't navigating the trials of 6th-century monk Saint Marinos (Lex Alston), 14th-century mystic Margery Kempe (Brooke Ferris), or 15th-century French hero Joan of Arc (Becca Canziani).
These three historical figures are honored with loving "clown care" and hip-hop hilarity in How to Become A Saint (while wearing pants). The 60-minute exploration kicked off the New York City Fringe Festival last evening at the Wild Project, offering a much-needed sanctuary of wit and rhythm.
A Sacred Skewering
While rooted in real events and historical figures, the piece—collaboratively written and performed by Alston, Canziani, Ferris, Lynn Hodeib, and Ania Upstill—is a clever work of historical fiction. It deftly skewers gender norms, religious dogma, and the weight of history. Much like The Book of Mormon, the production manages a delicate balancing act: it ridicules the institution while maintaining respect for the individuals guided by principles of faith.
Faith and Inclusivity
The show’s greatest strength lies in its heart. It offers a message of radical hope to the LGBTQ+ community—many of whom have been historically shunned by traditional churches and their "leaders." By reclaiming these saints in a queer perspective, the play transforms old hagiographies into modern anthems of belonging.
The cast is collectively amusing, with each performer finding their own distinct moment to shine. There is a palpable chemistry among the ensemble that keeps the energy high.

The Verdict
Heresy be damned! With Holy Week upon us, there is no better time to spend an hour with these unbounded saints. Whether you’re a believer, a skeptic, or something in between, this show is a testament to the power of identity and the joy of subversion.
Invite your favorite sinner, throw on your favorite trousers, and head to the Wild Project—but go before Saturday. After that, they return to their celestial realm.
