Ten years ago, Williamsburg was a place I would just hang out in. As of recently I now live there. When moving into any new neighborhood, you have to find your "go to spots". After my visit to Little King, I believe I have found my first. Now in proper brunching fashion, I went out the night before and had a few cocktails. So that morning, my body was ready for a good meal and drink to help lighten the burden that was my hangover.
To begin the process there was coffee and the need for a good cocktail. It wouldn’t be brunch without a good beverage and the drink menu has a wide arrange of classics and even a signature hangover Martini.
Little King offers a few variations on the Bloody Mary. I went for the Maggie which is Mezcal based. The smokiness of the Mezcal was really bold and the chili salt rim was subtle but an effective pairing. What I really enjoyed was that it was perfectly simple. Recently every Bloody Mary has so many garnishes that it feels like a hit and run at a salad bar. Less is more and good to see this is respected here.
The menu is quite inspired for brunch. Items range from classic to interesting new takes. I opted for the Duck Confit Waffles, which is every bit as good as it sounds. A dense but compact waffle with the confit baked into it that was well accented by ginger butter, fresh sliced scallion and maple syrup. Sweet, decadent and with a ton of brightness from the aromatics it is one of the most interesting and rewarding dishes I’ve had in a while. I do possibly wish that I had ordered a side of poached egg but this stands strong on it’s own.
Duck seemed to be the theme of the meal as my companion ordered the Duck Breast Hash. This dish is built upon a bed of crispy potatoes, braised cippolini onions, asparagus, and sunny side eggs. I found this to be a hearty affair. The duck breast was perfectly cooked, rendered and was the star of this hearty bowl. The cippolini onions which were honey braised had a nice sweetness and a familiar play with the potatoes.
At Little King it seems to be the little touches and accents that make the experience outstanding. One item that I would recommend you order in addition is the Toasted Baguette with butter and house made jam. The jam consisted of summer berries and interestingly had a hint of five spice. It was one of those little things that makes Little King truly memorable.
So if you’re in the market for a new & exciting brunch offering, I implore you to seek out Little King. It truly stands out among the countless spots and will have you wanting to come back for repeat visits. I can’t wait for my next visit and especially to sample their dinner menu.
