It’s pretty bold for a Jewish guy to wear a Bernie Sanders t-shirt to the West Bank. After spending a few minutes in the presence of Jon Schnitzer, you’ll quickly learn that fearlessness is his currency.
The funny and insightful Schnitzer is currently starring in his own solo show, Just the Tip, which was created during the Covid-19 lockdown. The piece was featured in SoHo Playhouse's International Fringe Comedy Encore Series last November; their annual roundup of the best comedy acts from around the world.
It’s hard to believe that he has only been doing his act for four years, as he is a natural onstage. With hi self-described look as either “Brooklyn hipster” or “to the right of Duck Dynasty,” Schnitzer relays his tale of growing up Jewish in California in an area chock full of antisemites and evangelical Christians.
Tackling topics from circumcision, a birthright trip, and the ongoing war between Israel and Palestine, he goes to places that few dare to tread and does it masterfully. Even though he makes light of some aspects of religion, he keeps things respectful. Ultimately, his 60-minute show is about unity and humanity, two characteristics that the world could certainly use.
Whether you are devoutly religious, agnostic, atheist, somewhere in between, or none of the aforementioned, Schnitzer has a witty story for you—and he is someone to believe.
